Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment

About PRP Injections

A PRP injection is obtained from a simple blood draw from one’s arm. A centrifuge spins the cells to concentrate the over 1000 growth factors, which help healing, reduce inflammation, and lessen scar formation. An ultrasound is used to place the PRP into the precise area needed, completing the procedure in under 15 minutes in most cases. Normal activities may be resumed with caution, and patients will be able to drive themselves or return to work as one would with most simple injections such as cortisone, viscous gel, etc. Using cold for 20 min intervals, and a compressive wrap are recommended in the first few days as needed.

There are two ways that PRP is used, and their formulation varies with where placed:

Joints

We use a leukocyte-poor platelet rich plasma (LP-PRP) because we do not want leukocytes (white blood cells) to cause an inflammatory response in your knee, hip, shoulder, or ankle joint injection. This is why it is important to spin the white and red blood cells out of the plasma and isolate the platelet-rich portion for the injection. This requires 15 cc’s, or a small tube, of blood from your arm. Be sure to drink lots of fluids before coming to the office, as it makes the procedure easier.

Muscle Tears, Tendonitis (Tennis and bowler’s elbow), Ligament Tears and Plantar Fasciitis

We use a leukocyte-rich platelet rich plasma (LR-PRP) because we want to induce an inflammatory healing response in an area where poor blood flow exists. This targets the torn tissues that have not allowed for prior healing. A bit more blood is needed for this sampling, but it is still only a single pin stick in the arm. Again, using cold for 20 min intervals and a compressive wrap is desirable.

Normal daily activities, such a return to work, driving, and bathing activities are permissible after either PRP injection. No medications need to be stopped before or after these procedures.

New Treatments - New Technology

An initial consultation can explore individualized treatment plans, which may help avoid surgery or be used as an adjunct to a planned procedure. A determination can be made if the procedure is to be done in an office or in a hospital setting. Procedure costs will vary based upon your insurance, co-pays, deductibles, whether one or two body areas are chosen, and where your particular procedure is performed. To schedule a consultation, call 937-415-9100. Appointments can generally be scheduled within one or two days.
